Information:
Todd and Angela Owen have been working in Uria, Papua New Guinea among the Somau Garia people since 1997. They are serving as translators with Pioneer Bible Translators. Their years living in this village, well off the beaten path, have been spent gaining mastery of the complicated language and developing a love for the people. The Owens believe that true knowledge of Christ can only come from knowing the Word of God. And so it is that they have brought their young family to a place so far removed and foreign from their home in the States. Their primary tasks are translation of the New Testament into the previously unwritten Somau Garia language, lifestyle evangelism, teaching, preaching, discipleship and leadership training.

The Somau Garia people live in an area of rain forested mountains. The approximately 4000 people are subsistence farmers, preparing gardens each year to meet their needs. Coffee and cacao (chocolate) production provides income for the people at commodities markets in the provincial capital. The literacy rate is less than 25%.

Prayer Requests:
  1. Pray that the veil of deception might be removed from the hearts of the Somau Garia people.
  2. Pray that the Owen family will have strength, courage, and resolve as they minister among the Somau Garia.
  3. Pray that God will protect the Owen family from sickness, physical harm, and spiritual attack as they advance the gospel.
  4. Pray that God will empower the Somau Garia men who work at the task of translation with courage, love, and perseverance, that their adversaries will be won to Christ by their example.
  5. Ask God to raise up five Somau Garia evangelists, who will preach with power and divine unction, full of the Holy Spirit.
  6. Ask God to give the Owen family clear insight and wisdom as they attempt to effectively minister in the context of Somau Garia language and culture.
  7. Ask God to opent he Owens’ hearts and minds so that they can communicate fluently in the Somau Garia language.
  8. Ask God to grant Todd and the Somau Garia co-translators clarity and success as they draft and revise the gospels of Mark and Luke. A Bible translator has to be a linguist, farmer, doctor, mechanic, politician and psychiatrist, among many other things, in order to be effective.
  9. Pray that God will give them courage and resolve in the multi-faceted task they are facing.
